South Dakota barnstormer pilot Clyde Ice was born today in 1889. Ice manned many daring flights, including a harrowing trip through a blizzard in 1947 on the day of his son's funeral. Ice flew a doctor 80 miles north from Spearfish to a Harding County ranch, where a woman was about to give birth three months prematurely. After giving birth, Ice flew the three-pound baby girl back to the hospital. The return flight took two hours. Ice used power lines, the only visible landmarks, as his compass.
